Encouraging Reflections on Activism - Jim Hightower and American populism

Bill Moyers sits down with populist Jim Hightower to look at the history and legacy of people's movements and discuss how ordinary people can reclaim political power. Hightower frames progressive views better than anyone I've heard, even George Lakoff. This was from the last episode of The Journal, which spanned 40 years. Moyers adds a cutting exclamation point on U.S. Plutocracy, but first, here is why Bill Moyers decided to end The Journal on PBS. -Ice G.…See More

When asked what he thought of Western civilization, Mahatma Gandhi said, “I think it would be a good idea.” Much of the world’s envy towards the West comes from the misdirection and fear projected from the West by its’ deeds. These deeds are influenced by a collection of shared human needs and values. What is the West's Responsibility?

by Ice GoldbergJune 22nd, 2009”In fifty years –a single lifetime– the earth has been more radically changed than by all previous generations of humanity” [1]. Taken lightly, total ecological devastation could effectively arrive this century in the form of climate change due to –putting it simply– the global mismanagement of resources. Do elites use corporate power to control politics because they don't trust people to vote? Would they [elites] rather design the outcome of elections than have the votes of millions of under-educated citizens (with their potential to swing decisions based on uneducated, weak and susceptible reasoning) participate democratically?
